On Tuesday 10 December, Noelene King retired as a director of the Melbourne Royal Board, ending an impressive 13-year tenure with Melbourne Royal. But this is only the latest chapter in her remarkable journey of over five decades of dedication to Melbourne Royal, the Show, and the agricultural community.
Noelene first joined the Melbourne Royal Board in September 2011, but her involvement with Melbourne Royal and the Melbourne Royal Show spans far beyond that. For over 50 years, she has been an unwavering advocate for agricultural excellence, with a particular focus on the cattle section. In fact, her service to Melbourne Royal is part of a lifelong commitment to advancing Victorian agriculture.
Noelene's leadership journey began around 1999 when she joined the council of the Royal. Her tireless efforts were recognised in 2015 when she was made a Life Councillor, and again in the same year, she was honoured as an Honorary Life Member of Melbourne Royal.
One of Noelene’s enduring contributions has been her service on the Melbourne Royal Beef Cattle Competition Committee.
She began in 2001 and chaired the committee for an impressive 14 years. During this time, she played a pivotal role in shaping the competition and ensuring it became the prestigious event it is today. She also served as the chair of the poultry committee for several years, a role she held until 2020, demonstrating her versatility and commitment across multiple areas of the Melbourne Royal Show.
Noelene’s service extended far beyond the confines of committee work. Her vision and tireless advocacy have been instrumental in the development of the Showgrounds, where she championed the creation of first-rate facilities for showcasing cattle and sheep. This work has provided future generations with world-class spaces to display their livestock, and her legacy will continue to impact Melbourne Royal for years to come.
Beyond her involvement in the Royal, Noelene has remained a passionate and steadfast supporter of youth in agriculture, encouraging young people to engage with and pursue careers in this vital industry. She has inspired many, and her dedication continues to inspire future leaders.
Noelene’s energy, passion, and unwavering commitment to Melbourne Royal, Victorian agricultural shows, and the broader agricultural community have been truly remarkable. On behalf of the directors, management, staff and volunteers, Melbourne Royal thanks Nolene for her exceptional service and contributions over the years.
