Pie in the Sky
Constructed in 1977, the Pie in the Sky is all that remains today of what was at the time a new concept in food kiosks for the Royal Melbourne Show.
The pie structure supported on boomerang shaped pillars enclosed a large circular kiosk that sold take away food and provided covered walk through dining.
Built for Four’N Twenty and O’Brien Catering, the fibre glass pie on top of the structure was originally pastry coloured and sported Four’N Twenty branding.
Pies were first sold at the Show in 1947 when Bendigo pie maker Les McClure introduced his new Four’N Twenty pies to the market place. The popularity of the pies was such that McClure established a pie factory at the Showgrounds, which was later superceded by a purpose built factory in Ascot Vale.
The Pie in the Sky was (and continues to be) a popular meeting point at the Show and the structure was heritage listed in 1999. When the showgrounds were redeveloped in 2006 the Pie in the Sky remained as a significant reminder of the site’s history as it does today.
